Despite budget overruns and a troubled production, the movie still earned over $540 million at the box office. A sequel starring Brad Pitt was therefore announced, for which Steven Knight and Dennis Kelly turned in screenplays, and bothJ.A. Bayona and David Fincher were attached as director at different times. However, Paramount canceled the project in 2019 in the wake of a regime change, probably over budget issues, and the sequel has been in development hell since.
