The content of the silver briefcase is never revealed, making the briefcase a good example of a modern "MacGuffin", a plot device often employed by Alfred Hitchcock. A MacGuffin is an object that serves to drive the plot forward without having any importance in itself. As such, the object or its purpose often remains unidentified. However, director John Frankenheimer revealed it partially (at around 1h 37 mins) when Sam and Vincent are in a bar trying to know where is Gregor, who previously deceived them stealing the silver briefcase and escaped with it. After Sam locates in the bar a father with two little girls carrying the same kind of briefcase, Vincent boards them to question about it, revealing that it's a briefcase for ice skates, a thing apparently unconnected with the movie until it's revealed that Mikhi's girlfriend Natacha Kirilova is a famous ice skater (implying that Mikhi used her fame to introduce "something" inside the silver briefcase to take it away inadvertently).
