Viggo Mortensen's character is based on writer William S. Burroughs. Burroughs's novel Il pasto nudo (1991) was adapted onto film by David Cronenberg. Mortensen appeared in Cronenberg's films A History of Violence (2005) and La promessa dell'assassino (2007).
