When first discussing the case, Vole raises the issue of Adolf Beck who was convicted for fraud in 1896 and served 5 years in prison. It later emerged that it was a case of mistaken identity and that the real culprit was Wilhelm Meyer. Beck's case led to important reforms, including the creation of the Court of Criminal Appeal.
