Although it's never been sourced as a direct reference or connection to Apocalypse Now (1979), the Francis Ford Coppola Vietnam war epic that came out over a decade later, both films have the end of the end credits over some kind of air strike. For Apocalypse Now, it's actually called "the air strike ending" which is only on certain versions, and is a napalm strike. While here it's first an explosion in the water (representing the continuation of the Pacific Theater, that Wayne's character continues to be part of although no person is shown) and then the Atom bomb, which of course, ended the war started by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, which begins this movie.
