Originally the film portion was supposed to have been shot at the New York Macy's, but the store revoked permission at the last minute. Director Paul Bogart shot 20 minutes of establishing silent color footage featuring Anthony Perkins on the street and in Macy's walking among the real-life patrons. The bulk of his character's entrance into the department store was compiled from this footage. The film reels got stuffed into Bogart's closet, where they sat undisturbed for over 40 years until he dusted them off for the DVD release in 2010.
