The extended director's cut, aka the Ultimate Cut, shows I racconti del vascello nero (2009), scenes from the graphic novel the teenage boy is reading. Parts of this story line are nearly identical to Roma: Pharsalus (2005). In both, bloated corpses from a sunken ship are tied together to form a raft, and it is used to escape a desert island. In both stories, they also catch a live seagull and eat it raw, and later vomit it up.
