It is later revealed in Captain Marvel (2019) that Nick Fury named the superhero team after Carol Danvers' Air Force callsign 'Avenger'. However, she is never mentioned in this film and does not appear in the MCU timeline until Avengers: Endgame (2019), six years after the events of The Avengers.
