Kenneth Lonergan had worked with Mark Ruffalo when he co-starred in the original off-Broadway production of Lonergan's play "This Is Our Youth." When he saw Anna Paquin in the London production of the play, during which time he was writing the screenplay for "Margaret," he kept envisioning her as Lisa and wrote the part with her in mind. Paquin later said that she felt "completely in sync" with Lonergan throughout the making of the film. He wrote the part of Joan (Lisa's mother) for his wife, J. Smith-Cameron. Matthew Broderick, who played the English teacher, is Lonergan's best friend. Jonathan Hadary and a number of other actors in the film were people Lonergan knew from the New York theater world.
