Some time after New Line managed to secure Marlon Brando, Richard Stanley learned that New Line had gone behind his back and offered the movie to Roman Polanski. Stanley's great-grandfather, explorer Henry Morton Stanley, was one of the chief inspirations for Conrad's lead character.
