The backstory from Phoebe's call to Ray establishes that the original team disbanded in part due to declining busts and ghost sightings after Ghostbusters II (Acchiappafantasmi II) (1989). This is the same basic backstory that Extreme Ghostbusters (1997) used to explain what had become of Ray, Winston, and Peter since The Real Ghostbusters - I veri acchiappafantasmi (1986). Peter's sentiment is even the same as the animated Egon: The team was too good and they put themselves out of business.
