Kevin Kwan, the author of the book on which the movie is based, has been charged with draft dodging in his native Singapore. He is liable to a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years upon conviction. Kwan has committed offenses under the Enlistment Act, a mandatory enlistment for all persons 16.5 years old and served at around 18 years of age for two years; he and his family have resided in the United States since 1990. Despite government notices and letters sent to his overseas address, he has also stayed overseas without a valid exit permit. In 1994, his application and subsequent appeal to renounce his Singapore citizenship, without serving NS, were rejected.
