Production designer Dante Ferretti had to leave this movie shortly after principal photography began, to start work on Al di là della vita (1999). However, he left detailed instructions and designs for art director Pier Luigi Basile to implement during shooting, and he returned to the set every two weeks to check that everything was going okay.
