The notion that a fighter pilot of that day would strafe and kill an enemy pilot who survived a crash was absolutely unheard of. During that era, enemy pilots knew how absurdly risky and dangerous their job was and they had great respect for each other. Although they were fierce enemies, they did practice the code of chivalry.
