George Lucas told film buddy and fellow director William Friedkin that American Graffiti was Lucas's Amarcord (the classic 1973 Fellini movie about young men on the eve of war, cruising around and pondering the meaning of the world in fascist Italy). "Is that how he sees this movie?" Friedkin mused in an interview. "My God, does he take himself seriously!"
