The consensus for the role of the casting of the Max Basner character was Jackie Gleason. Ray Stark, Chairman of the Board of RASTAR, sent Gleason the script. The two had previously worked together on, among others, Giocattolo a ore (1982) and the Il bandito e la madama (1977) film series. The script arrived at Gleason's home at 1030h Eastern time and when Stark reached his office at 1030h Pacific time (i.e. three hours later), Gleason was on the phone committing to the role. ''It was the fastest 'yes' I ever received from a star," said Stark.
