Bromhead's regiment was involved at Islandhwana on 22 Jan. during which Captain Reginald Younghusband was killed. This created a vacancy into which Bromhead was promoted, the announcement being Gazetted on 21 March. However, Bromhead's seniority was backdated to 23 Jan. Had the Commanding Officer of 24th Foot had a mobile phone then in all probability Bromhead would have been made acting Captain, and therefore Chard's senior, during Rorke's Drift. One can only wonder how events might then have unfolded.
