Some have misunderstood why Anjelica Huston, only fifteen years older than John Cusack, was cast as his mother, but this age difference is true to the story. In the novel, Lilly gave birth to Roy when not quite fourteen (as mentioned in the movie as well), and when the book's events occur she is 39 and Roy is 25. The age of Moira (renamed Myra for the movie) isn't given, but Roy quietly estimates that she's about 35. When this movie was filmed, Huston, Cusack, and Annette Bening, who portrays Myra, were 38, 23, and 31, respectively.
