Paramount was at one point interested in distributing the movie, which would have payed off the film's debts all at once. However, during screening for the head of Paramount, the film's ending was incomplete, so the editor's assistant had to rush it to the screening, which had to be paused at a most inopportune moment. Paramount eventually passed on the film, so New Line Cinema did the distributing themselves.
