The film heavily parodies fairy-tales in general. But it also explicitly pokes fun at Disney's movies, such as Biancaneve e i sette nani (1937), Pinocchio (1940), La bella addormentata nel bosco (1959), and it sometimes directly parallels La bella e la bestia (1991). Additionally, DreamWorks Animation (the rights holders of the Shrek films) was bought for $4 billion US by NBC Universal, longtime rival to The Walt Disney Company, in 2016. Walt Disney used to work for Universal Studios the 1920s and 1930s and created Oswald Rabbit for them.
