Sally Kirkland had stated she was considered for, and almost got the role of, Masha, as she was good at playing characters that get in the face of male (or female) co-stars, but Sandra Bernhard was chosen, despite having no acting experience, because her forte while on both Johnny Carson and David Letterman was making the hosts uncomfortable by her over-the-top flirtation, which is what Masha does in this movie.
