The VFXperts at ILM developed a concept that the only other living things that can detect alternate dimensions besides humans are pigeons and cats. If you watch the film you can spot a few moments where cats and pigeons react based on Mirror Dimension events (eg one event has pigeons flying off of a twisting cathedral pillar twirling through the air).
