This film is one of four produced in a two-year span that climaxed with high-profile disaster sequences: it depicted the 1906 San Francisco earthquake; La buona terra (1937) built toward a devastating, richly detailed locust plague; L'incendio di Chicago (1938) charted, in fictional terms, the O'Leary family, whose cow famously kicked over the lantern that began the 1871 Chicago fire; and one of the characters' pathological jealousy leads to a cataclysmic shipwreck in L'uomo che amo (1937).
