During the first take of Fletcher's encounter with the panhandler, Don Keefer mistakenly shouted out "fuck off!" at the end of the scene rather than calling Fletcher a "jerkoff", to the great amusement of Jim Carrey and the crew. Director Tom Shadyac said that they would have used that take if not for the fact that it would have gotten the movie an R rating.
