Upon the release of this film, many fans of both the novel and the 1976 film criticized the casting choice of Chloë Grace Moretz in the role of Carrie White. In the novel, Carrie is described as a "homely, acne-ridden, slightly overweight girl with stringy, mousy hair and small eyes, dressed in outdated, modest clothing, and toting a copy of the Bible". Chloë looked nothing like this in the role. However, Chloe was praised for bringing an atmosphere of modernity to the story.
