When Edward "Brill" Lyle (Gene Hackman) is taking Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith) into the warehouse "office", one can see that it is a self-made Faraday Cage. It's a construct which design completely shields those inside from sending or receiving electromagnetic signals.
