Tabu and Irrfan Khan were the first choices to play Priyamvada and Jeetender Kaushik. Both declined the role, feeling that an older couple should be cast. Tabu thought more people would be shocked to see a woman older than herself getting pregnant on screen. She recommended Neena Gupta for the role.
