In a deleted scene, Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman explains to Daniela (Katie Sarife) that as a child, she once had such a severe asthmatic attack that she nearly died and ended up in the hospital. In the movie's behind-the-scenes documentaries, it is explained that Mary Ellen is terrified of death since then, which is the reason why the Ferryman (who comes to pick up dead souls) has it in for her specifically.
