The Soviet aircraft Colonel Tanner blows up with a hand grenade is a Yak-38 (NATO name; Forger) a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. It's similar in design and appearance to the British Harrier, though there are unique differences, the Forger uses one primary and two smaller-less powerful-engines for takeoff and landing. The Harrier uses just one engine entirely. Only 231 Forgers were made before production ceased in 1981.
