Julieta Serrano's first collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar in almost thirty years. They had previously worked together on many of his 1980s films: Pepi, Luci, Bom e le altre ragazze del mucchio (1980), L'indiscreto fascino del peccato (1983), Matador (1986), Legami! (1989) and, most famously, Donne sull'orlo di una crisi di nervi (1988).
