When Papillon and Dega are being marched from the boat though the colony, a "tapir" is seen in the foreground, knocking over water so it is deliberately noticed... In real life, Henri Charrière (the real Papillon) loved tapirs, and in his sequel, Banco, which takes place after his escape, these pig-like, long-snout animals would actually inadvertently help fisherman locate their prey.
