It is heavily implied through out the film that Montrose is the true father of Archibald Cunningham. They are of similar height, build, and face. When first introduced to Cunningham, the Duke of Argyll asks if he is one of Montrose's "likely lads", which can be interpreted as asking if he's a bastard son. Montrose even says that Cunningham was sent to him by his mother, but never mentions how they are acquainted. Montrose also refuses to throw Cunningham out despite being nearly fully aware of all of Archie's crimes. The final piece of evidence comes when Montrose takes off Archie's corpse the locket containing the image of his mother, either as a memento or once again concealing his connection to both her and her son.
