When Nigel Green and still photographer Bob Martin visited the Zulu War Museum in Ladysmith, they found a Queen Victoria commemorative silk handkerchief with "Bugle calls to be used in battle" printed on it. Green, who hadn't played a bugle since his time in the Navy, got permission to copy the notes after practicing for weeks. Armed with the proper bugle, Claude Hitchcock and the sound crew recorded the calls in a gorge for echo effect, and they were used in the final soundtrack.
