Jack Palance's Carl Grissom was based on mobsters Rupert Thorne and Carmine Falcone in the original comic narrative. Thorne was a corrupt politician and gangster who ordered one of his henchmen Joe Chill to murder Bruce Wayne's parents, Thomas and Martha. Thomas was a doctor who was running against Thorne for Gotham City councilman, and pledged to fight against the city's racketeers.
