According to Sally Kellerman, Robert Altman gave her the famous line "Oh my God, they've shot him!" as they were preparing to shoot the football game scene, by lowering his crane to her level and saying, "When the gun goes off to end the quarter, you say ...". Presumably he then gave Roger Bowen his line in response ("Hot Lips, you incredible nincompoop ...), so Kellerman on the first take would have been as surprised as later audience members.
