Mike is an Army Ranger and Green Beret (US Special Forces soldier) - one can clearly see the emblem patch on the right arm of his uniform and the headwear he sports in several scenes after his return home from Vietnam. Stevie and Nick are both Airborne troopers, with Nick a corporal, as shown by his stripes when he is released from the hospital.
