It's alleged by Tippi Hedren that Truffaut originally sought her out for the female lead but that Alfred Hitchcock (who had Hedren under contract) told Truffaut that she was not available to work with him. However, this has been denied by Truffaut's daughter Laura and producer Lewis M. Allen's son Brooke. Corroborating this is the casting files of Lewis M. Allen held at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin which includes correspondence for Julie Christie, Jane Fonda, Mia Farrow and Florence Henderson, but no mention of Tippi Hedren (or Jean Seberg).
