Although he relinquished the task of directing the film after a few days, Dustin Hoffman constantly imposed himself on Ulu Grosbard, whom he had persuaded to replace him, and tried as far as possible to take control of the film away from Grosbard. This caused a deep rupture in the once-strong friendship between the two men.
