Every time Steven Soderbergh showed a version of his film to Lem Dobbs, the screenwriter told the director he wasn't going far enough with the "fragmented" way Soderbergh chose to tell the straightforward story. Dobbs understands why Soderbergh did it this way. While the screenwriter notes some feel the film is derived from 1967's Point Blank, he thinks it takes notes from many films of the '60s as well as certain experimental films. Soderbergh notes he was looking for a way to make the delivery of information to the audience less traditional. Dobbs believes the fragmented nature to be more a literary device than cinematically stylish.
