According to Gary Foster, Avi Arad, and Mark Steven Johnson, the Director's Cut was in fact the originally intended theatrical release. It was a last minute decision to make the changes necessary to please 20th Century Fox and get the film a PG-13 rating. The Director's Cut was later released on DVD.
