The idea of John Connor becoming a Terminator had been considered for the previous film Terminator Salvation (2009), but in a different way. In the original ending for that movie, John Connor succumbs to his injuries after fighting with the T-800 in the factory. Since John's survival is essential for the morale of the Resistance, John's skin is surgically transplanted over the Terminator endoskeleton of Marcus Wright, in order to make everyone believe that John survived. But as soon as the procedure is complete, Skynet takes over control of the John Connor robot and kills all high-ranking Resistance members. This ending was deemed to bleak, but a subdued version (minus the part where Skynet takes over John) was also changed when it was leaked onto the internet, and caused extremely negative reactions from fans.
