Gene Hackman's character (Brill) is strikingly similar to his character in La conversazione (1974), Harry Caul. The assumption is that they are the same person, just using different names. Brill's/Caul's near-paranoia is well demonstrated at the end of La conversazione (1974), by which time his search for a listening device led him to completely destroy everything in his apartment, right down to the walls and tearing up all of the floorboards.
