The bubble dance was a popular burlesque dance form, dating back to the early 1920s and most likely even earlier. By the 1930s, Sally Rand's bubble dance routine was quite famous. Many members of the movie audience would have recognized Sir Charles Chaplin's globe dance, laughing all the louder.
