The escape of a destroyer from the Pearl Harbor attack with only junior officers aboard is based on the action of the USS Aylwin (DD-355). The story about being pursued out of the harbor by her captain is also based on fact, but rather than a few hundred feet behind the Aylwin, the captain's launch came no closer than 1000 yards.
