Director Franklin J. Schaffner noticed that the four young actresses playing the Grand Duchesses had gotten so caught up in the story that they felt like a real family. Some of the girls broke down in tears and became hysterical while filming the execution scene. In-between takes, they were taken backstage and given cups of tea to calm down.
