When the film premiered on ITV in late 1998, Philadelphia (1993) was Film of the Week in Radio Times. Reviewer Tom Hutchinson started writing like this: "Tom Hanks is an actor who isn't afraid of a challenge. Witness this, Hollywood's first major movie about AIDS".
