In a scene from the 2001 Director's Edition, the Ilia probe comments that carbon units (in this case, humans) are not true life forms. In other words, in case V'Ger is a living machine, its creator should also be a living machine. The same idea about the concept of God would be reused in Star Trek V - L'ultima frontiera (1989), where "God" (played by George Murdock), disguises himself to meet the expectations that Captain Kirk, McCoy, Spock and Sybok have about him.
