J.D. Zeik, one of the script's writers explained how he was inspired for the script: "In Nice, I was suddenly blinded by the sun when I saw 5 heavily armed policemen on the promenade. In that second, I knew the movie has to be set in France!" Zeik had read Shogun as a 15 year old and derived the movie's title and concept from this book. The "Ronin" in this movie are the former secret agents who are now without a master, selling their services to the IRA.
