In some, thought not all, cases, the identities of the dead artists possessing the schoolgirls have been changed from the source novel. As in the book, the student who has been chosen as a vessel for a visual artist is channeling the Hudson River school landscape painter Thomas Cole. However, the poet being channeled has been changed from the real Ellis Bell (the pen name of the English novelist and poet Emily Brontë, who wrote Wuthering Heights) to the fictional Elizabeth Webb; and the musician being channeled has been changed from the real Austrian composer Franz Schubert to the fictional William Kestler. As in the book, the identity of the mathematician or mathematicians being channeled remains unidentified.
