An early rough cut of the film had the rebel ships attack on the Death Star replaced with scenes from the classic war movie I guastatori delle dighe (1955). This was because the special effects model-work used in the final film was still being filmed in California and the editors needed something similar to cut into the movie to show the executives at 20th Century Fox how the film was coming along. In fact the model work was was still being filmed after all the live action filming had been completed.
